One lucky South Australian student is already on his way to becoming a future neurosurgeon, as he embarks on a scholarship to Scotland’s prestigious St Andrews University Oxbridge Program.
Westminster College student, Oscar Jolly, was accepted at the Oxbridge Program’s youngest entry level, as a year 10 student, for his interest in medicine.
“I was really happy and surprised to find out I was accepted, as only approximately 15% of those that apply around the world get in,” said Oscar.
Submitting an application letter, examples of schoolwork and references, Oscar gained a $7000 scholarship to the program.
Westminster was very supportive of Oscar’s academic endeavours so much so, that they spoke to the school’s foundation members asking for personal donations to assist funding.
Director of Development at Westminster, Miranda Starke, said the foundation board members were very generous in providing the remaining $1,500 for Oscar’s Oxbridge tuition fees.
“The foundation wants to be able to help students whenever they can to make the most of every opportunity they’ve been given,” said Starke.
Oscar will be taking full advantage of the month’s program, utilising the University’s state-of-the-art School of Medicine, for his major in medicine and minor in anatomy.
Enjoying a daily schedule that combines intellectual and curricular activities, fieldwork, workshops, guest speakers, group discussions and one-on-one discussion, Oscar’s father, Matthew Jolly, feels the course will pave the way for his son’s future.
“He has a mind that is open to new experiences and learning and I think that the people that meet him will see that immediately,” said Matthew.
Oscar is excited to travel to Scotland on June 14th to immerse himself in something so close to his heart.
“It’s just the experience itself, which will build on my interest, as it provides really rare opportunities in medicine for someone as young as myself,” said Oscar.
Oscar hopes his involvement in the program may open doors to tertiary study at St Andrews upon completion of high school.
